My vote would be Pitt but it looks like thats officially off the table. To be honest, it would be nice to have an intense rivalry with an extreme amount of hate, like OSU/UM Texas/Oklahoma etc. Not a rival, just usually always our toughest opponent so naturally we get the rowdiest for it but somehow they can't comprehend that. Not to mention the sting of when we beat you and won the big 10 and you still got in. They think we want to be their rivals because of this but we in reality we want to beat your skulls in and get into the playoff. Its because in recent history we have been fighting hard to make it out of the East and its always very close and they're usually the gate keeper. Ohio State on the other hand you can feel hate between the fans. Fan bases honestly can get along fairly easily too. Yea Michigan is a storied program and the games are big but it doesn't feel like a rivalry nowadays. First thing you'll hear at school is "It's (insert time of day) and Michigan still sucks". A lot of the student body is NJ/MD kids who fled those states for school so its more of a have fun, care free, see your friends from home vibe when we play.įinally, Michigan and OSU. We actually enjoy playing because we know we'll win. I know Rutgers and Maryland keep trying to make it happen, but to be honest we genuinely 100% don't care about either school in a rivalry manner. You can feel the hatred when these two schools meet anywhere, it feels personal. I won't say they're our rivals, because it's lopsided and we don't play them regularly, but it felt like it. But is it true?Īt school, I always felt a real rivalry with Pitt. As a school, we have fully bought into the mentality we have zero rivals. If you are a PSU fan or go to/attended the school, you will see "Unrivaled" shirts everywhere in the bookstore, downtown, and on gamedays. Pitt week is here: Following an easy Week 1 win, the Nittany Lions will look to avenge their 42-39 loss to the Panthers. That was Thompkins’ job on Saturday, and he succeeded. Believe it or not, it was Penn State’s first punt return touchdown since 2008 when Derrick Williams was still wowing Nittany Lion fans. Gliding up toward the middle of the field, Thompkins dusted Akron punter Nick Gasser to close out the 61-yard score. But once he got the edge, the speedy wideout was gone. With Akron’s coverage team closing in, it was a little daring on Thompkins’ part to even attempt a return. Punt return TD: Amani Oruwariye’s interception was a close second - and Barkley breaking ankles is up there, too - but Thompkins’ touchdown return is worthy of a few replays. The redshirt sophomore, who had 4.5 tackles for loss in 2016, got off to an impeccable start. Buchholz didn’t start, but he was a key part of a Penn State front-four that disrupted Akron’s backfield all day long. Buchholz had a forced fumble in the first quarter and tallied 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and four total tackles. But Barkley’s run ensured that the rout was on.ĭL Ryan Buchholz: The defensive lineman was all over the place. The Nittany Lions were on their way to really separating themselves from the Zips. But in a game that Penn State was supposed to win handily, it was Barkley’s dazzling dash toward the end zone that sealed it. Turning pointīarkley’s 80-yard run: There’s a lot to choose here. With 13.29 yards per touch (including receptions), Barkley gave the Beaver Stadium fans what they wanted in a rainy blowout. And later in the first half, Barkley found the end zone a couple of times himself. His 80-yard run probably should’ve been reviewed and dubbed an 87-yard score, but nonetheless it paved the way for McSorley’s 4-yard touchdown. His 17-yard catch - forcing five missed tackles and hurdling a Zip - set up Penn State’s first offensive touchdown. But once he did, as always and as expected, Barkley made the difference. And he didn’t even touch the ball on Penn State’s first nine plays. The human highlight reel started his Heisman Trophy campaign off in style, rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. But the right pick is sometimes the easy pick, and Barkley was the guy on Saturday.
